Week 17 weigh-in: I’m under 250 lbs!

Hey everyone

Do you know? It almost likes a huge relief to get under 250 lbs as I’m now nearer to 200 than 300 (having started this journey at 329). I thought I’d do myself a report card for this week:

What’s Erika done well this week?!

  • I lost 3 lbs! According to the MY Weight app, I lose 2.95 lbs each week on average.
  • I exercised daily. As well as miles and miles of walking, I’ve been doing daily workouts which I’ve loved. In fact, I’m discovering that exercising helps me to clear my head.
  • I had a Chinese takeaway but made sensible choices. Oh, no, a takeaway???!!! Yes, we can still have a takeaway and lose weight! I chose chicken with mushrooms with two spoonfuls of my husband’s boiled rice and I was full.
  • I had a pizza takeaway! Yes, two takeaways in one week! But I chose a small one with an Italian base (which is thin), reduced fat mozzarella, tandoori chicken and mushrooms. According to the Dominoes app, this came out at around 900 calories but I don’t eat the crusts so it would have been slightly less. I usually have rocket in my fridge that I throw on top which is a great way to bulk up food without piling on the calories.

What could Erika improve on?

  • Drink water. I really need to drink much more. After getting into the pattern of doing this a few weeks back, I shamefully almost lived on Diet Coke this week but watch out for next Monday’s blog to see if I’ve addressed the balance.
  • Possible eat more. You see, after having anorexia many years and getting caught up in the obsessive counting, I’m not counting every calorie I eat although I’m aiming for roughly 1200-1400 calories. But I think I’ve had days where I may have gone quite a bit less than this which could impact on my metabolism, etc.

As you’ll see in the table below, my BMI is almost down to 37.5 (after starting at 50) and to get under this is my next mini target as I’ll be halfway through the obese class II category (which goes from 35-39.9).

Later this week, I’m going to blog about emotional eating because I’ve been there, especially in the past. As I mentioned the other day, last week was the first time I’d nearly lost the grip on this new lifestyle but I didn’t give in. I’m still here with no cheat days or cheat meals….but more about that on Thursday/Friday.

Week 11 weigh-in: lots of goals can help

If you’re on a weight loss journey, you may have that figure that you’re desperate to see on the scales. You know, your goal weight. However far away it may be, it’s almost like everything hinges on seeing that celebratory figure.

The joy of ticking off a mini goal!

With more than 100 pounds still to lose, I wondered if it might be helpful to share with you what I’m doing. You see, I find that lots of mini goals along the way are really motivating because there are so many tiny achievements to be had: every 5lbs lost, every half a pound of fat lost, every half a BMI point, every next stone/half stone mark (what are stones?), every non-scale victory achieved, etc. So, on the notes section on my phone, I’ve written all these lists and I then take great pleasure adding a tick when I achieve another mini goal. In fact, it’s rare that I don’t get to add at least one tick for each pound lost.

So, today, after losing 2lbs this week, it means that I can tick off the 265lbs goal and the one to show I’m finally under 19 stone. Look at how I’m just 1lb away from being able to do the longest zipwire in the UK. That said, I weigh myself naked and I guess I need to factor in the weight of clothes. There’s no doubt a rule about not doing zipwire in the buff!! I’m also 3lbs away from no longer being morbidly obese.

New additions to the ‘When I lose weight, I will…..’ page

I’ve thought of two more things I’d like to do when I’m light enough. One is to abseil! I’ve never done that even though I don’t have an issue with heights so that might become a charity fundraiser.

The other thing is that, to my absolute joy, I discovered the other day I’m actually light enough to do Go Ape. I don’t know whether any of you outside the UK have something similar but Go Ape is basically like an assault course but high up in the trees, with rope bridges, floating planks of wood to carefully get over, etc. whilst wearing helmets and safety harnesses. There are several around the UK. I want to wait until I have the confidence to wear trousers and not worry about whether the safety harness will fit but I thought this would be a fab thing to do.

I’d love to hear if you’ve also set yourself mini goals or if there’re things you’d like to do when you’re smaller/lighter.

When I lose weight, I will……

Mmm, what would you say if you’re on a weight loss journey? What does your weight or size currently stop you from doing? I think that starting to think about these things is helpful as it acts likes a carrot for me. Yes, the weight is coming down and, yes, the body measurements are getting smaller but when there’s still so much weight to lose (132lbs), visualising the ‘new me’ keeps me positive and focused.

So, here’s my list of targets and milestones that I can hopefully tick off on this ‘new me’ journey:

  • be able to put my feet together when I stand up (currently there’s a 1.5″ gap due to my large legs)
  • get into a dress that I wore on a cruise 2 years ago (UK size 22) – I’m almost there
  • wear ankle boots that don’t cut into my large calves
  • be able to wear 3/4 trousers once my legs are slimmer
  • be able to kneel down without experiencing excruciating pain in my legs
  • wear Wellington boots (haven’t worn for years)
  • be able to run 5K, first alone but then at a park run
  • be able to run a half marathon of 13.1 miles
  • get back into my 10 year old jeans (UK size 14)
  • not even think about whether I can comfortably fit in a chair with arms including at the cinema and on a plane
  • be able to resume smear tests (pap tests) without utter embarrassment (I currently privately pay for a test I administer myself at home and then send off)
  • ditch the maxi skirts that I wear every single day!
  • ride a horse (local riding school quotes 196lb maximum weight)
  • have a helicopter flying lesson (231lb maximum weight)
  • be able to go on a hot air balloon (roughly 252lb maximum weight)
  • go down Zip Wire Velocity 2 in North Wales which is over 1,500 metres long and involves going over 100 miles an hour (264lb maximum weight).

Wow! Reading through this list (which obviously isn’t in order of likelihood of being achieved), there really are some seriously big goals but smaller ones too. No doubt, this list will get added to over time and I can celebrate the small and large successes with you!
